The Holy Spirit

Now that we have looked at the basic beliefs about God the Father, the Trinity, and Jesus Christ, it is time to focus our attention on the the Holy Spirit. Here are some basic beliefs about the person and the work of the Holy Spirit.

A few things about the Person of the Holy Spirit:

  1. The Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father (John 14:16).
  2. The Holy Spirit is a person, not a thing (John 16:18, Ephesians 4:30).
  3. The Holy Spirit is part of the Trinity (Matthew 28:19).
  4. The Holy Spirit speaks (Romans 8:26).
  5. The Holy Spirit is God (Acts 5:3-4).
  6. The Holy Spirit is omnipotent (1 Corinthians 12:11).
  7. The Holy Spirit is omnipresent (Psalm 139:7-10).
A few things about the work of the Holy Spirit:
  1. The Holy Spirit was present in creation (Genesis 1:1-2).
  2. Mary conceived Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:35).
  3. The Holy Spirit was present at the Baptism of Jesus (Matthew 3:16).
  4. The Holy Spirit prepared Christ for his work of atonement (Matthew 4:1).
  5. The Holy Spirit was present at the Crucifixion of Jesus (Luke 23:46).
  6. The Holy Spirit was involved in the resurrection of Jesus (Romans 8:11)
  7. The Holy Spirit restrains sin (Genesis 6:3).
  8. He gives life (Psalm 104:30 and Job 34:14-15).
  9. He gives us our new birth (John 3:3-7).
  10. He gives us our spiritual resurrection (Ephesians 2:5).
  11. The Holy Spirit has a role in making us new creations (2 Corinthians 5:17).
  12. He gives power (Numbers 27:18).
  13. He purifies (1 Corinthians 6:11).
  14. He convicts of sin, righteousness, and judgment (John 16:8-11).
  15. The Holy Spirit reveals.
    • He gave revelation to the Prophets and the Apostles (Ephesians 3:4-6).
    • He gives evidence of God’s presence (Romans 8:16).
    • He guides and directs God’s people (Romans 8:14).
    • He provides a godlike atmosphere when he manifests his presence (Romans 15:13-14., Ephesians 2:19-22).
    • He gives us assurance (Romans 8:16).
    • He teaches and illumines.
  16. He unifies (Philippians 2:1-2).
  17. He gives stronger and weaker evidence of the presence and blessing of God in our lives according to our response to him in or present situations (1 Peter 4:14 and Judges 13:25 and 16:20).
  18. He gives spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 12:11).
  19. The Holy Spirit inspired the human authors of the Bible with the messages to write (2 Timothy 3:16, 2 Peter 1:21).
  20. The Holy Spirit lives in our hearts (John 14:16-17).
  21. The Holy Spirit is with you when you suffer for the Gospel (Romans 8:26).
